Police cleared Hoboken Middle School after a reported threat prompted emergency security measures at four schools, temporary street closures, and the evacuation of Church Square Park.

HOBOKEN, NEW JERSEY — October 29, 2026 — Several schools in Hoboken were placed under emergency security measures Thursday afternoon after authorities received a report of a potential threat involving Hoboken Middle School.

The incident prompted a police investigation, the evacuation of Church Square Park, and temporary road closures in the surrounding neighborhood.

By 3:46 p.m., the Hoboken Police Department confirmed that the middle school had been cleared and no threat had been found.

All affected students were dismissed, and the surrounding streets and park were reopened.

What Happened?

At approximately 2:07 p.m., city officials announced that police were investigating a potential threat near Hoboken Middle School, located in the A.J. Demarest building.

According to Hoboken School Superintendent Dr. Christine Johnson, the school had received a telephone call considered a potential threat. The call was not directed at any specific individual.

Police immediately implemented precautionary security measures.

Hoboken Middle School was placed under lockdown, while three other educational facilities were ordered to shelter in place:

  • Calabro School
  • Hudson School
  • Rue Building

Students were required to remain inside while police investigated the situation.

Church Square Park was evacuated, and middle school students who had been outside for recess were moved to another location.

Authorities also temporarily closed streets between Fourth and Sixth streets and between Bloomfield and Garden streets.

Residents were advised to avoid the area.

Police Clear the School

As the investigation progressed, authorities gradually reopened the surrounding streets and began arranging student dismissals.

At approximately 2:35 p.m., officials announced a controlled dismissal procedure for Hoboken Middle School.

The other affected schools were permitted to dismiss students at their regular times.

In an official alert issued at 3:46 p.m., the city confirmed that the Hoboken Police Department had cleared the middle school and determined that there was no threat.

The lockdown was lifted, and Church Square Park and all surrounding roads reopened.

Questions Remain About the Reported Threat

Although the emergency ended without a confirmed danger, authorities have not publicly released detailed information about the original threat.

Officials have not identified the person responsible for the reported communication or announced any arrests connected to the incident.

No injuries were reported in the official alerts.

The incident also comes three weeks after a separate security alert at Hoboken High School on October 8, when a reported telephone threat led to precautionary lockdowns at three schools.

That earlier incident also ended after police determined that there was no threat.

School Safety Remains a Community Concern

Thursday’s response demonstrates how quickly a reported threat can disrupt normal school operations and affect surrounding public spaces.

Even when an investigation finds no danger, precautionary lockdowns can create uncertainty for students, parents, teachers, and nearby residents.

The events in Hoboken also highlight the importance of timely communication between police departments, school administrators, and families during emergency situations.

The immediate danger has been ruled out, but the circumstances surrounding the reported threat remain unclear. For Hoboken families, Thursday’s incident was another reminder of the importance of school safety, emergency preparedness, and clear public communication.
