Germany – October 25, 2026. New before-and-after photographs of Hitler’s former mountain retreat, known as the Eagle’s Nest (Kehlsteinhaus), reveal extensive damage to the historic building following a devastating fire in the Bavarian Alps.

The photographs compare the building’s interior before the blaze with the charred remains left behind, highlighting the destruction of architectural features that had survived for nearly nine decades.

Historic Building Nearly Destroyed

The fire broke out on Friday, October 23, at approximately 9:15 p.m. at the Kehlsteinhaus, located 6,017 feet (1,834 meters) above sea level near Berchtesgaden in southern Germany.

By the time firefighters arrived, the building was engulfed in flames.

Approximately 200 emergency personnel participated in the response. Firefighters faced difficult conditions because of the building’s remote mountain location, strong winds, and challenging access.

Authorities confirmed that no injuries were reported.

Original Architectural Features Severely Damaged

Completed in 1938 during Nazi rule, the Eagle’s Nest was one of the few surviving buildings associated with Adolf Hitler that had remained largely intact following World War II.

Its interior contained historic stonework, wooden architectural elements, and a famous red marble fireplace presented to Hitler by Italian dictator Benito Mussolini.

The newly circulated photographs show extensive fire damage to interior spaces, with blackened walls, burned structural elements, and debris replacing areas that previously retained their historic appearance.

The full extent of damage to individual original features, including the marble fireplace, has not yet been officially established.

Suspect Detained as Investigation Continues

German authorities detained a 33-year-old man suspected of involvement in the fire.

Investigators are examining whether the blaze was deliberately set and whether any political motive was involved.

The suspect was reportedly stopped while riding a motorcycle away from the area.

Authorities have not announced a final determination regarding the cause of the fire.

Flames Reignite During the Night

On Sunday, October 25, German and Austrian media reported that flames had reignited overnight inside the damaged structure.

Firefighters returned to extinguish the remaining hot spots.

Authorities subsequently announced that the main firefighting operation had ended, although additional work could be necessary if hidden embers reignited.

A Historic Site Facing Reconstruction

The Kehlsteinhaus was built as a prestigious mountaintop retreat during the Nazi era, although Hitler himself rarely visited the property.

Since 1952, it has operated as a tourist attraction, restaurant, and historical site.

The building also featured an exhibition explaining its history and connection to the Nazi regime.

Bavarian officials have expressed their intention to restore the damaged structure, emphasizing its significance as a place of historical remembrance.

The fire has left one of Germany’s best-known surviving Nazi-era buildings facing extensive reconstruction, while the before-and-after photographs provide a striking record of its destruction.
