Photos of Balkan and European leaders with U.S. President Donald Trump, taken during a reception on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly in New York, have sparked an unexpected storm on social media.

The reason is unusual: in a large number of the photos, Trump looks almost exactly the same — the same smile, the same body position and his recognizable thumbs-up gesture.

The resemblance was so striking that claims quickly began circulating that some of the officials may not have been photographed with the U.S. president at all, but with a cardboard cutout of him.

Photos That Look Almost Identical

Social media users began comparing photographs published by delegations from across the region.

Among them were photos featuring Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić, Albanian Prime Minister Edi Rama, Kosovo Prime Minister Albin Kurti, North Macedonian Prime Minister Hristijan Mickoski and Romanian President Nicușor Dan.

In many of the images, Trump is standing at almost exactly the same angle toward the camera, with the same facial expression and his right hand raised in his familiar thumbs-up gesture.

The similarity is so strong that when the photographs are placed side by side, Trump can appear almost frozen while only the guests around him change.

That visual coincidence triggered a wave of comments, comparisons and photo montages online.

Serbian opposition politician Nemanja Šarović also publicly raised the suggestion that some leaders had been photographed with a cardboard version of Trump.

The internet then did what it often does: memes, edited images and AI-generated pictures began circulating, making it increasingly difficult for viewers to distinguish jokes and satire from actual evidence.

One widely shared image appeared to show Albin Kurti posing beside a cardboard Trump with a visible support behind the figure. However, that image was not evidence that such a setup existed at the reception. Reports tracing the image found that it had been presented as a satirical, artificially created version of the original photograph before spreading more widely on social media.

The Explanation May Be Much Simpler

Similar speculation also spread in Romania after President Nicușor Dan published his photograph with Trump.

Romania’s Presidential Administration rejected images suggesting that Dan had posed with a cardboard Trump, describing those representations as false and AI-generated.

There is also a much less mysterious explanation for why so many of the official photographs look alike.

At diplomatic receptions attended by large numbers of guests, photo opportunities can happen very quickly. Guests move in and out of the frame while the host may remain in essentially the same position and repeatedly use a familiar pose for official photographs.

If the same photographer, camera position, background and lighting are used, dozens of separate photographs can end up looking remarkably similar.

That appears to be exactly what made the images from the New York reception so unusual when viewed together.

Other Photos Complicate the “Cardboard Trump” Theory

Other photographs from the event show different poses and moments.

One image involving Montenegrin President Jakov Milatović, for example, shows a different arrangement in which Trump does not reproduce the exact same thumbs-up pose seen in many of the other official photographs.

Such images make the idea of a single stationary cardboard figure considerably less convincing and point instead toward repeated protocol photography involving the actual participants.

At the same time, one important detail remains: according to publicly available reporting, the White House itself has not issued a specific explanation for why Trump appears so remarkably similar across the series of official photographs.

That means the striking visual similarity is real, even though the viral “cardboard Trump” images circulating online are not proof that a cardboard figure was actually used.

When Diplomatic Protocol Becomes an Internet Mystery

The episode shows how quickly a visual oddity can turn into an online mystery.

For a short time, nearly identical photographs gave social media users perfect material for memes, speculation and theories about what had actually happened inside the reception.

But they also reveal something about the highly choreographed world of diplomatic events.

When dozens of political leaders pass through the same spot, stand in front of the same camera and pose beside the same host within a short period of time, official diplomacy can begin to look surprisingly like “copy and paste.”

In this case, there is no verified evidence that Balkan leaders were photographed with a cardboard Donald Trump.

What is verified is something almost as visually unusual: a series of official-looking photographs in which the guests change while Trump’s smile, position and signature gesture remain remarkably similar — enough to turn an ordinary diplomatic photo

opportunity into an internet mystery.
