Members and supporters of the Revolutionary Communists of America gathered Saturday afternoon in New York City’s Tompkins Square Park for a rally in support of Cuba.
Video from the scene showed demonstrators carrying Cuban flags and red flags featuring the hammer-and-sickle symbol.
The New York rally was part of a broader national day of action organized by the Revolutionary Communists of America, with similar events announced in cities including Philadelphia, Boston, Chicago, Los Angeles, Seattle and others. The group had publicly scheduled the New York gathering for 2 p.m. at Tompkins Square Park.
Rally Focused on U.S. Policy Toward Cuba
The organization says the demonstrations are intended to defend the Cuban Revolution and oppose U.S. sanctions and other forms of pressure on Cuba.
On its own website, the Revolutionary Communists of America has promoted the October 3 events under the message “Defend the Cuban Revolution! End the Imperialist Siege!”
The group openly identifies as a revolutionary communist organization and is the U.S. section of the Revolutionary Communist International.
Demonstration Comes Amid Renewed Debate Over Cuba
The rallies come as U.S. policy toward Cuba remains a source of political debate.
The organizers accuse Washington of worsening Cuba’s economic crisis through sanctions and restrictions, while U.S. officials have historically defended sanctions as pressure on the Cuban government over political repression, human rights and democratic freedoms.
Saturday’s gathering in Manhattan was one of several coordinated demonstrations organized around the same message.
