PEMBERTON TOWNSHIP, NJ — November 5, 2026 — Democratic candidate Belinda Fontanez has defeated Republican Mayor Matthew Bianchini in Pemberton Township’s mayoral election, bringing an end to a controversial campaign marked by a viral video showing the incumbent mayor charging toward a resident during a public council meeting.

The election, held November 3, came less than two weeks after the confrontation attracted widespread media attention and prompted public calls for Bianchini’s resignation.

According to unofficial Burlington County election results, Fontanez received 3,998 votes, compared with 1,983 for Bianchini, delivering a decisive victory for the Democratic challenger.

Viral Video Sparks Public Outrage

The controversy erupted during an October 21 Township Council meeting when Mayor Bianchini abruptly left his seat and rushed toward resident Michael Sawka, a frequent critic of the local administration.

Video footage shows the mayor shouting threats as several people intervened to physically restrain him.

The confrontation occurred during a tense public meeting that included discussion of the termination of former township Police Chief Kenneth Gerber from his position as community development director.

Sawka had made an offensive hand gesture toward the mayor, according to accounts of the incident.

Bianchini later said he believed Sawka had directed inappropriate behavior toward his family, including his wife and daughter.

The mayor acknowledged that his reaction was wrong but defended his actions, saying he had reached a breaking point after months of what he described as harassment.

The video quickly circulated across social media platforms and attracted coverage from local and regional news organizations.

Calls for Mayor’s Resignation

Following the incident, Sawka publicly demanded Bianchini’s resignation and filed a court complaint seeking criminal charges related to the confrontation.

The episode intensified criticism of the mayor’s conduct and raised concerns about public officials’ behavior during government meetings.

Bianchini refused to resign, defending his response while maintaining that he had been subjected to repeated personal attacks.

The incident became one of the most widely discussed controversies during the final weeks of the mayoral campaign.

Although the video attracted considerable attention, there is no conclusive evidence establishing how many voters changed their preferences because of the incident.

Democratic Candidate Wins by a Wide Margin

The November 3 election produced a clear victory for Fontanez.

According to preliminary results:

  • Belinda Fontanez (Democrat): 3,998 votes
  • Matthew Bianchini (Republican): 1,983 votes

Republican Councilman Dan Dewey also entered the mayoral race as a write-in candidate and received 50 identified write-in votes. Hundreds of additional write-in votes had not yet been attributed to specific candidates.

The results remain unofficial until certification by Burlington County election authorities.

Fontanez’s victory means that Pemberton Township will have new leadership after a year of significant political controversy.

Democrats Also Win Township Council Races

The mayoral contest was not the only victory for local Democrats.

Democratic candidates Frank Dickey and Debra Kauffman won two full-term Township Council seats, defeating Republican candidates Daniel Dewey and Mildred Tuchez.

Dickey received 3,936 votes, while Kauffman received 3,927.

Democrat Jason Allen also won the election for an unexpired council term, defeating Republican Tracey Ricciardelli by 4,012 votes to 2,416.

The results represent a broader Democratic victory in the Burlington County municipality, extending beyond the mayoral race.

Bianchini Concedes Defeat

Following the election, Bianchini publicly acknowledged his defeat and congratulated Fontanez.

In a statement reported by News 12 New Jersey, the outgoing mayor reflected on the challenges of political leadership and expressed respect for the electoral process.

He called for a peaceful transition of power and urged residents to move beyond the divisions of the campaign.

Bianchini had been appointed mayor in January 2026 following the resignation of former Mayor Jack Tompkins. The November election was his first attempt to win a full mayoral term.

His time in office was marked by political disagreements, controversies involving local officials, and increasingly tense public meetings.

A New Political Chapter for Pemberton Township

Fontanez’s victory marks a leadership change in Pemberton Township, a Burlington County community that has experienced considerable political turmoil during 2026.

The election also highlights the growing public visibility of local government proceedings in an era when videos from municipal meetings can spread rapidly through social media.

The confrontation involving Bianchini became a significant part of the public discussion surrounding the election, although the results cannot be attributed solely to that incident.

With Democrats winning the mayor’s office and the contested council seats, the township now faces a transition to a new administration.

For residents, the election brings an opportunity to assess the direction of local government, public accountability, and the relationship between elected officials and the communities they serve.
