MONTCLAIR, New Jersey — October 27, 2026 — Montclair State University has received the prestigious Seal of Excelencia, a national recognition awarded to colleges and universities demonstrating a sustained commitment to improving educational outcomes for Latino students and the broader student population.

The university is now among just 55 institutions nationwide to have earned the designation, placing it in a select group of American colleges and universities recognized for expanding educational opportunities and supporting student success.

The recognition was announced by Excelencia in Education, a national nonprofit organization dedicated to advancing Latino student achievement in higher education.

One of 21 Institutions Recognized in 2026

Montclair State University was among 21 institutions receiving recognition this year and one of 10 institutions earning the Seal of Excelencia for the first time.

University representatives were recognized during an event in Washington, D.C., on October 27.

The designation evaluates how colleges and universities use institutional leadership, data, resources, and educational practices to improve student outcomes.

It goes beyond enrollment numbers, examining whether institutions create meaningful opportunities for students to complete their education and prepare for professional careers.

Supporting Latino Students and Expanding Opportunity

Montclair State University President Jonathan Koppell emphasized that serving Latino students requires more than simply enrolling them.

According to Koppell, universities must understand students’ different experiences, recognize their abilities, and provide the opportunities and support necessary for academic and professional success.

Montclair serves a diverse student population, including many students eligible for federal Pell Grants, which generally support undergraduate students with financial need.

The university has focused on improving access to education, strengthening student support programs, and creating pathways toward graduation and career development.

Katia Paz Goldfarb, Associate Provost for Hispanic Initiatives and International Programs, highlighted the importance of connecting institutional leadership, resources, and educational practices to student success.

She also emphasized that programs designed to improve Latino student outcomes can strengthen educational opportunities for students from all backgrounds.

Why the Recognition Matters

Institutions holding the Seal of Excelencia represent less than 2 percent of American colleges and universities, yet collectively enroll approximately 16 percent and graduate 18 percent of Latino college students nationwide.

These figures demonstrate the role that participating institutions play in expanding access to higher education.

For New Jersey, the recognition highlights Montclair State University’s contribution to educational opportunity in one of the country’s most diverse states.

The designation also reflects a broader national discussion about how universities can improve graduation outcomes, reduce educational disparities, and prepare students for the workforce.

A National Recognition With Long-Term Significance

The Seal of Excelencia is not simply an award for diversity or enrollment. It recognizes institutions that demonstrate a sustained, evidence-based commitment to improving student achievement.

For Montclair State University, receiving the designation represents national acknowledgment of its institutional strategy and ongoing work to support student success.

The recognition also brings additional attention to the university’s role in promoting social mobility, educational access, and workforce development.

As higher education institutions across the United States face increasing pressure to demonstrate measurable student outcomes, Montclair State University’s recognition highlights the importance of providing not only access to college, but also the resources and opportunities students need to complete their education successfully.
