The Minnesota congresswoman wins more than 76% of the vote and delivers a strong message to President Donald Trump, declaring that she will not be silenced.

MINNEAPOLIS, MN — November 4, 2026 — Democratic Congresswoman Ilhan Omar has secured a fifth term in the U.S. House of Representatives, winning a decisive victory in Minnesota’s 5th Congressional District despite repeated criticism from President Donald Trump and an ongoing federal investigation into allegations concerning her immigration history.

According to unofficial results released by the Minnesota Secretary of State, Omar received 262,702 votes, or 76.48%, while Republican challenger John Nagel received 55,765 votes, or 16.23%. Independent candidate DeVelle L. Jackson finished third with 7.02%.

All 217 precincts in the district had reported results by early Wednesday morning.

Omar’s victory allows her to continue representing Minneapolis and surrounding communities, a district she has served since January 2019.

Omar Sends a Direct Message to Trump

Following her reelection, Omar celebrated the result and thanked voters for their continued support.

“Thank you, Minnesota! I’m incredibly honored to continue to represent you in the People’s House with a resounding mandate,” she wrote on X.

She added:

“We will not allow Trump to silence us.”

During her victory speech, Omar also criticized the president, referring to him as a “bigot” and arguing that voters had rejected his administration’s policies.

Her comments came after months of public confrontation with Trump, who has repeatedly criticized Omar over immigration, political loyalty, and her positions on American foreign policy.

Victory Despite Federal Investigation

Omar’s reelection comes amid a federal investigation involving allegations about her immigration history and financial disclosures.

In October, federal agents searched her Washington, D.C., residence as part of an investigation involving immigration documents and allegations raised by her political critics.

Some of those allegations concern claims that Omar entered into a fraudulent marriage to assist another individual with obtaining legal immigration status.

Omar has consistently denied the allegations. No criminal conviction has established that those claims are true.

She has characterized the investigation as politically motivated and accused the Trump administration of using federal law enforcement against political opponents.

The investigation remains a separate legal matter from the election result, and her reelection does not determine its outcome.

A Long-Running Political Conflict

Omar, who was born in Somalia and came to the United States as a refugee, became one of the first two Muslim women elected to Congress in 2018.

Since then, she has emerged as one of the most recognizable progressive lawmakers in Washington.

Her political positions include support for expanded healthcare access, affordable housing, immigration protections, and greater congressional scrutiny of American military involvement abroad.

She has also been a prominent critic of U.S. foreign policy toward Israel and has advocated for Palestinian rights.

These positions have made her a controversial figure in national politics, attracting both strong support and significant criticism.

Trump has repeatedly targeted Omar in public statements, including questioning her presence in American politics and suggesting she should return to Somalia.

Omar, who became a naturalized U.S. citizen in 2000, has rejected those attacks and emphasized her constitutional role as an elected representative.

More Than 76% of the Vote

The scale of Omar’s victory demonstrates her continued electoral strength in Minnesota’s 5th District.

The district includes Minneapolis and several neighboring communities and has historically been one of the most reliably Democratic congressional districts in the country.

Her Republican opponent, John Nagel, a former Minnesota State Patrol officer, campaigned on stronger fraud prevention, border security, healthcare reforms, and national defense.

Despite these issues, Omar maintained a substantial advantage.

Her 76.48% share represents a margin of more than 60 percentage points over Nagel, although the district’s strongly Democratic voting history provides important context for interpreting the result.

The outcome also followed Omar’s victory in the August Democratic primary, where she defeated several challengers.

What Her Reelection Means for Congress

Omar’s victory comes during a consequential midterm election in which Democrats have made substantial congressional gains.

Her return to Washington will allow her to continue advocating progressive legislative priorities and participating in congressional oversight of the Trump administration.

In her postelection remarks, Omar emphasized the importance of accountability and suggested that Democrats would use their expanded congressional authority to scrutinize federal government actions.

Her reelection also carries symbolic importance for Somali-American and Muslim-American political representation.

Omar remains among the highest-profile Muslim elected officials in the United States and one of the most prominent members of the progressive wing of the Democratic Party.

A Political Victory, but Legal Questions Remain

While Omar’s decisive victory secures another two-year term in Congress, the ongoing federal investigation remains unresolved.

Her supporters see the election result as a rejection of the political attacks directed at her, while her critics argue that the investigation should continue independently of the vote.

For Omar, the result represents both an electoral victory and an opportunity to continue her confrontation with the Trump administration from within Congress.

As she prepares for her fifth term, Omar has made her position clear: she intends to remain politically outspoken, defend her constituents, and challenge the president despite the continuing federal scrutiny.
