New Jersey Gov. Mikie Sherrill on Tuesday criticized President Donald Trump over the cost of living and questions surrounding his family’s business interests.

“President Trump is raising costs on American families while enriching himself,” Sherrill wrote in a post accompanying a video interview with CBS News correspondent Scott MacFarlane.

Affordability Becomes a Central Political Issue

Her statement comes as Democrats increasingly connect affordability concerns with allegations of corruption and self-enrichment ahead of the 2026 midterm elections. The Washington Post reported Tuesday that Democratic candidates and strategists are increasingly framing rising household costs and concerns about Trump’s financial interests as part of the same political argument. Republicans have pushed back on that message and accused Democrats of politicizing ethics concerns.

The affordability issue is also receiving renewed attention. Axios reported Tuesday that consumer prices have risen by more than 5% since Trump returned to office, while borrowing costs remain high. The report also noted that wage growth has failed to keep pace with inflation over the past several months. At the same time, the White House points to continued consumer spending, low unemployment and economic growth as evidence that the economy remains resilient.

Scrutiny of Trump Family Business Interests

Questions surrounding the Trump family’s business interests have also intensified. Reuters reported that Democrats are preparing possible investigations into Trump family business dealings if they gain control of Congress in the November midterm elections. The planned scrutiny could include companies, investments and financial relationships that lawmakers say may raise conflict-of-interest concerns. Trump allies have characterized such efforts as politically motivated.

Recent Business Deals Draw Attention

Recent reporting has also focused on business ventures involving members of Trump’s family. Reuters reported this week that a company backed by Donald Trump Jr. invested in Canadian drone company Draganfly, adding to scrutiny of business relationships involving defense-related companies.

The Washington Post has separately reported that Trump and members of his family have significant investments connected to the rapidly expanding artificial intelligence sector, raising questions about potential conflicts as the administration shapes federal AI policy.

A Broader Midterm Debate

Sherrill’s remarks therefore come amid a broader national debate over two issues likely to remain prominent ahead of the midterms: the cost of living and the financial activities of the president and his family.
