JERSEY CITY, NJ — Governor Mikie Sherrill marked the 25th anniversary of the September 11 attacks with a message of remembrance from the Empty Sky Memorial, overlooking the Hudson River toward Lower Manhattan.
“New Jersey will Never Forget,” Sherrill wrote, honoring the 750 New Jersey residents who lost their lives on September 11, 2001.
The governor reflected not only on those who were killed, but also on the lives they never had the chance to continue living. She said New Jersey remembers the values that were attacked, the lives that were lost and the way communities responded to unimaginable tragedy by continuing to move forward together.
The Empty Sky Memorial at Liberty State Park stands as New Jersey’s official September 11 memorial. Its location, facing the Manhattan skyline, gives the annual remembrance particular significance for a state that lost hundreds of residents in the attacks.
Sherrill’s message came as communities across New Jersey held ceremonies, moments of silence and memorial events to mark 25 years since 9/11, honoring victims, survivors, first responders and the families whose lives were forever changed.
