France has a long history of turning political and social discontent into mass protest.

From the French Revolution of 1789 — widely regarded as one of the defining bourgeois revolutions of the modern era — to the upheavals of May 1968, nationwide labor strikes, the Yellow Vest movement and the protests against pension reform, public demonstrations have repeatedly played a major role in French political life.

That tradition is once again visible across the country.

Tens of thousands of students have joined demonstrations over deteriorating classroom conditions, teacher shortages, overcrowded schools and concerns about education funding. What began in disadvantaged suburbs around Paris has spread nationwide, affecting more than 1,200 schools, according to Reuters.

Students say they are being asked to study and sit important exams in schools where classes are overcrowded, teachers are missing and buildings are in poor condition. The frustration has intensified after the government proposed an education budget increase of about 1.7% for 2027 — below the rate of inflation.

The movement has also gained support from teachers and unions, while demonstrations in several cities have led to clashes with police, injuries and thousands of arrests, many involving teenagers. Authorities have called for calm as another national student demonstration is being organized.

The protests come at a difficult moment for France, where the government is also trying to introduce major spending cuts while dealing with high public debt and political divisions ahead of the 2027 presidential election.

For France, scenes of blockaded schools, marches and confrontations in the streets are part of a much longer political tradition. From 1789 to the Yellow Vests and today’s student movement, protest has remained one of the country’s most visible forms of public pressure on those in power.
