LIUZHOU, CHINA — Chinese robotics company UBTECH Robotics has opened a smart manufacturing facility in Liuzhou where humanoid robots are being used on the production line to help assemble other robots.

The facility is part of China’s rapidly expanding push into humanoid robotics and large-scale industrial automation. UBTECH has already begun mass production of its Walker S2 industrial humanoid robot and is testing humanoids in manufacturing, logistics and other workplace environments.

According to reports about the new facility, it is designed for production of more than 10,000 humanoid robots annually, with an eventual target of producing roughly one completed robot every 10 minutes.

The image of “robots building robots” sounds futuristic, but the reality is closer to advanced industrial automation. Humanoid robots can assist with selected assembly, material-handling and repetitive tasks, while humans still supervise many parts of the process.

Reuters reported recently that China has become a global leader in humanoid robot manufacturing, but current machines still struggle with dexterity, adaptability and fully autonomous factory work. Many systems remain slower and less flexible than traditional industrial robotic arms.

Even so, the Liuzhou facility shows how quickly the technology is moving from demonstrations and prototypes toward mass production.
