From theater and live music to comedy, exhibitions and performances, arts and culture stories drew attention across New Jersey this past week.

According to New Jersey Stage, its most-read stories from September 6 through September 12 came from eight New Jersey counties: Atlantic, Bergen, Camden, Cape May, Essex, Mercer, Monmouth and Union. The publication says it produces at least 70 arts-related articles, features and event previews each week.

Among the stories attracting readers was a celebration of five years of Ugly Pancake comedy at the Jersey Shore, with organizers preparing their largest festival yet. The group has been bringing stand-up comedy to the Shore since 2021.

Music also featured prominently. Wicked Cool Records announced Friends of Jesse Malin: I Would Do It For You – Vol. 1, a tribute album honoring singer-songwriter Jesse Malin and his influence on the New York and New Jersey music scene.

In Maplewood, the fifth annual Broadway in the Park brought Broadway-inspired rock and pop music to Memorial Park, while theater audiences in Union were drawn to Premiere Stages’ production of Flawless at Kean University — a play exploring the unsettling possibilities of artificial intelligence taking control of the creative process.

The weekly list reflects how broad New Jersey’s cultural scene has become, spanning large theaters and universities, local parks, comedy venues, independent music and community arts events.

For residents looking beyond breaking news, the state’s arts calendar continues to offer something different almost every day — often much closer to home than people realize.
