President Donald Trump opened his public remarks after meeting New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani with an unexpectedly warm message.
“I’ve seen it with numerous different mayors — some great ones and some not so great ones — so hopefully you will be a great one. And you are off to a start.”
The comment came after the two met Monday at Gracie Mansion in New York City, their third face-to-face meeting and their first in New York since Mamdani took office. Despite major political differences, both men again emphasized areas where the federal government and City Hall could work together.
Affordable housing remains a major topic
One of the most important issues linking the two administrations is the proposed redevelopment of Sunnyside Yard in Queens.
Mamdani has been pushing a plan to build a massive platform over the rail yard and create 12,000 affordable homes, including 6,000 Mitchell-Lama-style units, along with parks, schools, health clinics and other public infrastructure. The project would also be expected to create roughly 30,000 jobs.
The city has said the plan would require more than $21 billion in federal grants, making cooperation with Washington essential if the project is ever to move forward.
Mamdani first presented the proposal directly to Trump during a White House meeting in February. At the time, both sides agreed to continue discussions. Months later, Mamdani said conversations about Sunnyside Yard were still active, describing the site as one of the city’s biggest opportunities to create large-scale housing on land already occupied by rail infrastructure.
Trump and Mamdani have found areas of cooperation
Their relationship has drawn attention because the two come from very different political backgrounds and have publicly disagreed on immigration, taxes, policing and other policies.
But their meetings have repeatedly focused on practical issues affecting New York City, particularly housing and affordability. During their first meeting after Mamdani’s election, both said they wanted to find ways to make the city more affordable.
Monday’s meeting took place while Trump was in New York for the United Nations General Assembly. Mamdani’s office had said beforehand that the discussion would focus on issues affecting New York City and New Yorkers.
Sunnyside Yard could become one of the city’s largest housing projects
Sunnyside Yard covers roughly 180 acres of active rail infrastructure in Queens. For decades, city leaders have discussed the possibility of building above it, but the enormous engineering and financial requirements have prevented those plans from moving forward.
Mamdani’s proposal revives that idea on a much larger scale, with affordable housing at its center. He has described the project as a way to address New York’s housing shortage while also creating thousands of jobs and new public facilities.
Whether the federal government will ultimately commit the billions of dollars required remains unresolved. But Trump’s public comments Monday suggested that, despite their political differences, the relationship between the president and the mayor remains open and cooperative.
For Mamdani, who has repeatedly said New York cannot solve its housing crisis without federal help, that relationship may prove especially important as the Sunnyside Yard proposal moves forward.
Trump also joked about the media presence after the meeting, saying: “They said they were going to boycott me, but they never boycott me. Look at all that press.”
The remark appeared to reference the ongoing dispute over White House press access and the decision by major television networks to suspend pooled coverage after CNN was blocked from its scheduled duties.
