For a few minutes in the night sky above New York Harbor, the missing Twin Towers seemed to rise again.

On the eve of the 25th anniversary of the September 11 attacks, a drone light installation titled “2,977 Lights Over New York Harbor” brought the outline of the destroyed World Trade Center towers back into the skyline. The tribute used 2,977 drones — one for each person killed in the 9/11 attacks. The lights first moved upward in a spiral formation before assembling into the full-scale shape of the Twin Towers.

The aerial memorial was created with input from members of the 9/11 family, survivor and first responder community. Organizers said the goal was to honor each life individually while also creating a collective act of remembrance for a city and a nation still shaped by that day.

According to organizers, the installation was designed in dialogue with the annual Tribute in Light, the two iconic beams that rise each year from Lower Manhattan. This new project added another visual layer of remembrance, using drone technology to briefly rebuild the towers in light above the harbor.

The event marked a deeply symbolic moment ahead of Thursday’s 25th-anniversary ceremonies, as New York once again paused to remember the lives lost at the World Trade Center, the Pentagon and aboard Flight 93.

For those watching from below, it was not just a light show. It was a moment of memory — and for a few quiet minutes, a skyline restored in light.
