NJ Transit’s Raritan Valley Line was temporarily suspended Friday morning after a train fatally struck a person at the Plainfield station, disrupting the morning commute.

The incident occurred at approximately 5:40 a.m. According to NJ Transit, Train 5406 had departed Raritan at 5:09 a.m. and was scheduled to arrive at Newark Penn Station at 6:08 a.m. When the train reached Plainfield, it struck and fatally injured a person whom officials described as a trespasser.

Service on the Raritan Valley Line was suspended following the incident as authorities responded and investigated. The line connects communities including Raritan and Plainfield with Newark Penn Station, making the disruption particularly significant during the morning rush.

NJ Transit did not immediately release the identity of the person who was killed or additional details about the circumstances leading up to the strike.

The incident is another reminder of the dangers surrounding active rail lines and stations, where entering restricted track areas can have fatal consequences.
