Several separate fires and electrical incidents were reported across New Jersey and New York as the region dealt with strong winds, rain and power disruptions.
In Ho-Ho-Kus, New Jersey, three adults and several animals were displaced after an early morning fire on Crescent Place. According to local authorities, a transformer across the street from the home blew and sparked a fire in the basement. The residents were able to escape and get their pets out safely.
In Bay Shore, Suffolk County, New York, firefighters battled a large scrapyard fire while dealing with strong winds from the nor’easter. Multiple vehicles were reported on fire at a scrapyard on Moffitt Boulevard, sending a large column of smoke into the air. Several fire departments responded, and crews worked for hours to bring the blaze under control. No injuries were reported. The fire also caused delays on the Long Island Rail Road’s Montauk Branch because the scrapyard is located near the tracks.
A third incident occurred in Brighton Beach, Brooklyn, where two manholes caught fire and flames shot through a street grate. FDNY and Con Edison responded to the scene. A small number of customers temporarily lost power, but service was later restored. No injuries were reported.
Con Edison said the Brighton Beach incident was not related to the nor’easter and was believed to involve a failure in underground electrical equipment.
The three incidents were separate events, but together they added to a difficult day across the region, with strong winds, power problems and emergency responses reported in multiple communities.
