Gov. Mikie Sherrill announced that New Jersey is doubling its target for new homes built on state-owned land, increasing the goal from 20,000 to 40,000 housing units.
Sherrill said the state needs more housing and should move faster to use publicly owned land for residential development rather than waiting for new sites to become available.
The initiative is part of a broader housing strategy aimed at increasing supply, encouraging transit-oriented development and making better use of land controlled by state agencies and authorities.
The state has already identified opportunities involving properties connected to agencies such as NJ Transit and the New Jersey Economic Development Authority, including projects in communities such as Linden and Bayonne.
Sherrill’s administration has argued that increasing the overall housing supply is necessary to address affordability pressures across New Jersey, where rents and home prices remain a major concern for many residents.
