Republican Congressman Randy Fine of Florida has said that even First Lady Melania Trump and billionaire Elon Musk should face immigration consequences if they are found to have lied on their citizenship paperwork. His comments came during a discussion about the federal investigation targeting Democratic Congresswoman Ilhan Omar.

A Question About Equal Treatment Under Immigration Law

During an interview with NewsNation, host Nichole Berlie questioned Fine about the scrutiny surrounding Ilhan Omar’s immigration history and whether similar standards should apply to other prominent naturalized Americans.

The discussion turned to Melania Trump, who was born in Slovenia, and Elon Musk, who was born in South Africa. Both became naturalized U.S. citizens.

Fine said he supports reviewing the immigration records of naturalized citizens dating back to 1990 to identify cases involving potential fraud.

When asked whether Melania Trump and Musk should also face consequences if they had provided false information, Fine indicated that the same rules should apply to them.

However, he did not accuse either of immigration fraud or claim to possess evidence that they had submitted false documents.

Ilhan Omar Remains at the Center of the Controversy

The exchange took place against the backdrop of renewed scrutiny of Representative Ilhan Omar, a Minnesota Democrat who immigrated to the United States from Somalia as a child and later became a naturalized American citizen.

Omar has faced repeated allegations concerning her immigration history, which she has denied.

The Trump administration’s pursuit of these allegations has raised questions about political motivations, particularly given the president’s longstanding public criticism of Omar.

Fine maintained that Omar’s immigration records should be among the first examined.

Can American Citizenship Be Revoked?

Under U.S. law, naturalized citizenship can be revoked through a legal process known as denaturalization if the government establishes legally sufficient grounds, such as material fraud in the naturalization process.

However, denaturalization is not automatic.

A person cannot lose citizenship merely because a politician demands an investigation or questions the validity of immigration documents.

The government must establish its case through the applicable legal procedures. Deportation would also require a separate legal basis and process.

A Broader Question About Equal Protection

Fine’s comments highlight a larger debate over how immigration laws are enforced and whether politically connected individuals should face the same scrutiny as government critics.

If citizenship investigations are justified by evidence of fraud, the same legal standards should apply regardless of political affiliation, personal connections, religion, or national origin.

At the same time, investigations must be based on credible evidence rather than political disagreements or public accusations.

The controversy raises a fundamental question about the American legal system: Can immigration enforcement maintain public confidence if citizens believe that some individuals are investigated more aggressively than others because of their political identity?

Fine’s remarks do not establish wrongdoing by Melania Trump, Elon Musk, or Ilhan Omar. They do, however, bring renewed attention to the principles of equal treatment, due process, and the limits of government power over naturalized American citizens.
