Tirana, Albania – October 24, 2026. Violent clashes erupted again in Albania’s capital, Tirana, on Saturday as anti-government protesters fired fireworks, threw stones, and hurled Molotov cocktails at police officers. Security forces responded with tear gas, water cannons, and rubber bullets.
The demonstrations, which began earlier this month, have grown into a nationwide movement demanding the resignation of Prime Minister Edi Rama.
Protesters Attack Police and Government Buildings
Saturday’s demonstrations began around 2 p.m. outside the Ministry of Education before spreading to Skanderbeg Square, the Prime Minister’s Office, and several other locations in central Tirana.
Groups of protesters launched fireworks toward police officers, set rubbish bins on fire, and threw stones at security forces. Fires were also reported at government buildings, including the Ministry of Agriculture and Tirana Municipality.
Authorities deployed approximately 2,500 police officers to maintain security in the capital.
More Than 300 Injured During Recent Unrest
According to authorities, more than 300 protesters and police officers have been injured during the ongoing demonstrations, while dozens of participants have been detained.
Students are demanding lower tuition fees, improved educational conditions, greater government investment in schools, and action against corruption.
The protests have also attracted opposition supporters, university professors, artists, and other citizens dissatisfied with the government.
Prime Minister Rejects Calls to Resign
Prime Minister Edi Rama, who has governed Albania since 2013, has rejected demands for his resignation and called for dialogue with demonstrators.
Rama has accused violent groups of attempting to destabilize the country, while protesters argue that the government has failed to address their concerns.
Saturday’s confrontations mark another escalation in the political unrest that has gripped Albania since mid-October.
