On September 2, President Trump floated a provocative idea on Truth Social: renaming the Strait of Hormuz after himself. Now that the waterway is under U.S. control, he suggested, why not call it the “Trump Strait”? He argued the rebrand would make the strategic passage “hotter than ever before.”

Later, when questioned about whether the proposal was serious, Trump said he was “just throwing it out there.

The new map, posted on September 25, therefore stands out because it gives the idea a concrete visual identity rather than leaving it as a passing comment. The image shows the narrow waterway between Iran and Oman circled and labeled “TRUMP STRAIT.”

The Name Has Not Officially Changed

Despite the map, the internationally recognized name of the waterway remains the Strait of Hormuz.

Trump cannot by himself change the name used internationally by Iran, Oman, other governments, shipping organizations or international institutions. His administration could potentially choose a different terminology for certain U.S. government uses, but that would not automatically constitute an internationally recognized name change.

The Strait of Hormuz remains one of the world’s most strategically important maritime passages, connecting the Persian Gulf with the Gulf of Oman and the Arabian Sea.

Before the current conflict, roughly one-fifth of global oil supplies passed through the strait, making any disruption there immediately important to energy markets around the world. Yahoo

Not the First Map

The current post is also part of a broader pattern.

In August, Trump posted another map depicting the Strait of Hormuz as “NEW U.S. Territory,” and the official White House X account subsequently shared the image. That claim did not constitute an internationally recognized transfer of sovereignty. MercoPress

Then came the proposal for the name “Trump Strait.”

At first, Trump characterized it as something he was simply throwing out as an idea.

Now, with the name appearing directly on a map shared from his official account, the proposal has returned to public attention in a much more deliberate visual form.
