WASHINGTON — President Donald Trump said Wednesday that the United States may be approaching the end of the war with Iran and claimed Tehran is seeking a deal.

“We are hopefully toward the end of the Iran war. Iran wants to make a deal,” Trump told reporters.

When asked whether he had personally heard from Iranian officials, Trump replied: “Yeah.”

Trump did not provide details about who had contacted the administration, what was discussed or whether formal negotiations are underway.

His comments come as diplomatic activity around the conflict appears to be increasing. Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi said Wednesday that Iran remains open to diplomacy while insisting on the country’s sovereignty and rights. China has also urged both Washington and Tehran to return to negotiations and reduce tensions.

Trump is also expected to meet with leaders from Gulf countries next week on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly in New York, where Iran and possible postwar arrangements are expected to be discussed.

For now, however, there is no publicly announced agreement ending the war, and Trump’s statement represents an indication of possible diplomatic movement rather than confirmation that a settlement has been reached.
