Governor Mikie Sherrill says the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection has reduced one of its most complicated permitting backlogs by 72% since January, as part of a broader effort to make state government faster, more transparent and easier to navigate.

Sherrill said the administration has also launched a new Permitting Dashboard, designed to give applicants a clearer view of where their projects stand in the approval process.

According to the governor, the dashboard is intended to do two things at once: help applicants track progress more easily and give state officials better visibility into where delays are occurring.

Permitting delays can affect a wide range of projects, including construction, environmental reviews, infrastructure work and business development. Long backlogs can increase costs, slow investment and create uncertainty for applicants waiting on state approvals.

The administration says the new system is part of an effort to improve efficiency across government while also making the process more transparent.

Sherrill framed the changes as part of a promise she made when taking office: to make state government work faster and more effectively for residents, businesses and organizations dealing with state agencies.

The 72% reduction is a notable figure, but the larger test will be whether the improvement can be sustained and whether applicants see shorter and more predictable processing times across different types of permits.
