Governor Mikie Sherrill is calling on residents, housing leaders and developers to join New Jersey’s annual Governor’s Conference on Housing and Economic Development as the state looks for ways to build more homes and address affordability.
The two-day conference will take place September 29 and 30 at Harrah’s Resort Atlantic City and will mark the event’s 30th anniversary.
Sherrill, who will serve as the keynote speaker, said New Jersey cannot become more affordable without addressing the cost and availability of housing.
The conference comes as her administration moves forward with Executive Order 17, signed in April, which directs state agencies to look for ways to accelerate housing construction and expand access to housing.
A Housing Governing Council created under the order is reviewing state-owned land, regulations and development procedures that may be slowing construction. Recommendations from that review are expected to be presented at the September conference.
The event will bring together government officials, developers, housing professionals, nonprofit organizations and community leaders for workshops and discussions on affordable housing, redevelopment, energy affordability, adaptive reuse and neighborhood revitalization.
New Jersey has already begun moving forward with several housing initiatives connected to the governor’s broader strategy. In July, the state announced plans to seek developers for transit-oriented housing projects on state-owned property in Bayonne and Linden.
