As families across the United States prepare for the new school year, many states are once again offering back-to-school sales tax holidays, allowing shoppers to purchase qualifying school supplies, computers, and other educational items without paying sales tax.
New Jersey, however, will not offer a back-to-school sales tax holiday this year. The state’s annual sales tax holiday was repealed, meaning shoppers will continue to pay the regular sales tax on taxable school-related purchases.
In previous years, New Jersey provided a temporary sales tax exemption on eligible school supplies, computers, and certain sports equipment to help families reduce back-to-school expenses. That program has since been eliminated under state law.
Lawmakers have introduced new legislation that would restore an annual back-to-school sales tax holiday, but the proposal has not yet been approved. Until then, New Jersey families will continue paying the standard sales tax while shopping for the upcoming school year.
