Netflix is releasing a new documentary examining the unusual security operation in which President Donald Trump secretly switched aircraft while returning from a NATO summit in Turkey.

The documentary, “Instadocs: The Decoy Plane,” premieres on Netflix on September 4 and reconstructs the July 2026 incident through accounts from journalists, former security officials and people familiar with Air Force One operations.

According to Netflix, Trump was seen boarding Air Force One before leaving Turkey. But instead of remaining on the aircraft for the flight back to the United States, he was quietly taken off the plane, moved in a catering truck and transferred to another aircraft.

Members of the traveling White House press corps remained aboard Air Force One and initially did not realize that the president was no longer traveling with them.

The operation later became the subject of widespread public attention, with videos and speculation circulating online about why the unusual aircraft switch had taken place.

“The Decoy Plane” looks at the incident from the perspective of reporters who were present and examines the security measures used to protect a sitting U.S. president during international travel.

The documentary includes interviews with Reuters White House reporter Gram Slattery, Associated Press photographer Alex Brandon, investigative journalist Carol Leonnig, Washington Post reporter Dan Lamothe, former Secret Service agent Robert McDonald and former Air Force One crew member Wanda Joell

The film is part of Netflix’s Instadocs series, which produces fast-turnaround documentaries about major events while they are still part of the public conversation.
