Communities across New Jersey celebrated National Night Out Tuesday evening, an annual event that brings together residents, police officers, firefighters, and other first responders to strengthen trust, cooperation, and community spirit.
Members of the NJ RADAR newsroom attended one of the events, held in Fort Lee at the Jack Alter Community Center, where families and residents gathered for an evening of activities and entertainment. Visitors enjoyed live music, face painting, inflatable attractions for children, the popular “Pizza with the Police” program, and the opportunity to meet and talk with officers from the Fort Lee Police Department, firefighters, and other emergency personnel in a relaxed setting.
One of the highlights for younger attendees was the Cop Cards program, which was revived this year after a multi-year hiatus. Throughout the summer, children collected trading cards featuring photographs and short biographies of Fort Lee police officers by meeting them around town when they were not responding to calls. During Tuesday night’s event, prizes were awarded to children who completed the full collection or gathered the largest number of cards.
National Night Out events were also held in many other communities across New Jersey. In Madison, residents met with police officers, firefighters, EMS personnel, and local officials, while Somerville hosted a family-friendly celebration at Carol Pager Park with games and activities for children. Similar events took place in Montclair, Bloomfield, Glen Ridge, Denville, Mount Olive Township, Boonton, Newton, Hopatcong, Kearny, Trenton, Summit, and many other municipalities throughout the state.
For more than four decades, National Night Out has helped strengthen relationships between residents and the public safety professionals who serve their communities. Through informal conversations, educational activities, and family-friendly events, the nationwide initiative continues to promote safer, stronger, and more connected neighborhoods.
