MICHIGAN — Abdul El-Sayed has won the Democratic nomination for the U.S. Senate in Michigan, defeating Rep. Haley Stevens in one of the most closely watched Democratic primaries of the 2026 election cycle.
With nearly 90% of the expected vote counted, El-Sayed received about 49% of the vote, while Stevens secured 47%. Although the vote count was not yet complete, major U.S. news networks projected El-Sayed as the winner after determining that Stevens no longer had a realistic path to overtake his lead.
Although El-Sayed’s victory is now official, the outcome was far from certain just weeks ago. Early in the campaign, many political observers viewed Haley Stevens as the favorite due to her higher name recognition, strong support from the Democratic establishment, and significant fundraising advantage. In the final days, however, polls showed the race tightening into a virtual dead heat, with several analysts describing it as too close to call before Election Day.
The race was about much more than selecting a Senate nominee. Political analysts viewed it as a key test of the Democratic Party’s future direction.
Stevens represented the party’s more moderate, establishment wing. During the campaign, she received strong backing from Democratic leaders as well as significant financial support from pro-Israel political organizations, making the contest one of the most expensive Democratic primaries in the country.
El-Sayed, meanwhile, emerged as a leading voice of the party’s progressive movement, backed by Senator Bernie Sanders. Throughout the campaign, he advocated for universal healthcare, lowering the cost of living, and took a more critical stance toward U.S. policy on Israel while also criticizing the influence of wealthy interest groups in American elections.
His victory is widely seen as an important win for the Democratic Party’s progressive wing, which has often struggled in recent years against candidates supported by the party establishment.
El-Sayed will now face Republican Mike Rogers in November’s general election, a race that could play a significant role in determining control of the U.S. Senate.
