If you enjoy looking at the night sky, August 2026 could be one of the best months in years.
Astronomers say this month will bring an exceptional series of celestial events, including a total solar eclipse, the peak of the Perseid meteor shower, a deep partial lunar eclipse, and several beautiful planetary alignments.
Total Solar Eclipse – August 12
The month’s biggest event is the total solar eclipse on August 12. Totality will be visible from parts of Greenland, Iceland, and northern Spain, while a partial eclipse will be seen across much of Europe and parts of North America.
Perseid Meteor Shower Peaks the Same Night
Just hours after the eclipse, the famous Perseid meteor shower will reach its peak.
This year’s conditions are nearly perfect because the shower coincides with a new moon, meaning the sky will be exceptionally dark. Under ideal conditions, observers could see 50 to 100 meteors per hour, with bright fireballs streaking across the sky. The best viewing time is after midnight and before dawn.
Partial Lunar Eclipse – August 27–28
Later in the month, on the night of August 27–28, a deep partial lunar eclipse will be visible across North America, Europe, Africa, and much of South America.
More than 96% of the Moon will pass through Earth’s shadow, making it one of the most impressive lunar eclipses until the end of 2028. Although it will not be a total “Blood Moon,” much of the lunar surface is expected to take on a reddish-orange color during maximum eclipse.
Planetary Highlights
August also offers several attractive planetary events:
- Venus reaches its greatest evening visibility around August 15.
- Jupiter and Mercury appear close together in the sky.
- The Moon will make close approaches to Mars, Saturn, Venus, and the Pleiades star cluster throughout the month.
