JERSEY CITY, N.J. – Public interest in the proposed Casa 824 development near Journal Square continues to grow as residents prepare to voice their concerns during an upcoming Jersey City Redevelopment Agency (JCRA) meeting.
The proposed six-story residential building would rise on a block currently lined with mostly two- and three-story homes, making it another significant addition to the rapidly evolving Journal Square neighborhood.
Ahead of the virtual meeting, Esther Wintner, president of Civic JC, encouraged residents on Facebook to register in advance if they wished to speak during the JCRA meeting. She noted that anyone planning to address the agency must first be added to the speakers list.
While the development itself has attracted considerable attention, many residents are also questioning the city’s approach to redevelopment and the use of taxpayer dollars.
One resident publicly criticized the city’s decision to hire outside consultants for redevelopment work.
“Why are we hiring outside consultants for tasks that people in the city should be capable of doing? Why isn’t the JCRA and the City conducting this with their own professional experts—planners, designers, and finance professionals?”
The resident also called for greater fiscal responsibility and transparency, arguing that taxpayers deserve a clear explanation for why outside consultants are being hired if the city already employs qualified professionals to perform those same duties.
The comments reflect a broader debate taking place in Jersey City as redevelopment accelerates across several neighborhoods. While supporters argue that new housing projects help address demand and encourage investment near public transit, critics continue to call for greater community involvement, transparency, and accountability in the decision-making process.
The upcoming JCRA meeting is expected to provide residents with an opportunity to share their views, ask questions, and participate in the discussion surrounding the Casa 824 proposal.
