The reported tribute highlights the close relationship between Washington and Rabat, as well as their shared position on the disputed territory of Western Sahara.
U.S. President Donald Trump announced on Truth Social that Morocco plans to name a major highway project after him.
The road connects Tiznit in southern Morocco with Dakhla in Western Sahara and stretches approximately 1,055 kilometers, or about 655 miles. The project is regarded as an important transportation and economic corridor linking Morocco’s southern regions with the Atlantic coast.
What Happened
Trump shared a promotional video showing desert landscapes and sections of the Tiznit–Dakhla road, reportedly valued at approximately $1 billion.
The video referred to the route as the “President Donald J. Trump Highway” and presented it as a symbol of cooperation, economic development and closer relations between Morocco and the United States.
The road crosses Western Sahara, a territory administered largely by Morocco but also claimed by the Polisario Front, which seeks independence for the region.
Trump’s Reaction
Trump thanked Morocco’s King Mohammed VI and described the reported naming as a great honor.
He also said he hoped to travel the full length of the highway one day.
Diplomatic Background
Relations between Washington and Rabat strengthened significantly during Trump’s first administration.
In 2020, the United States recognized Moroccan sovereignty over Western Sahara as part of an agreement under which Morocco restored diplomatic relations with Israel and joined the Abraham Accords.
The United States has continued to support Morocco’s autonomy proposal for the territory and has encouraged American investment in regional infrastructure and economic-development projects.
No Official Confirmation Yet
Although Trump presented the naming as a completed decision, Moroccan authorities had not immediately issued a public statement formally confirming the new name.
For that reason, the announcement should currently be described as Trump’s claim or as a reported naming decision, rather than as an independently confirmed official action.
Several international outlets have nevertheless reported that the road will carry the name “President Donald J. Trump Highway.”
Broader Context
Since returning to office in 2025, Trump’s name has been attached to several public locations and infrastructure projects.
In July 2026, Palm Beach International Airport in Florida was officially renamed President Donald J. Trump International Airport. The name change took effect on July 9, while updates to signs, branding and airport identifiers were introduced in phases.
