New Jersey’s newly launched Supercomputer Initiative will receive more than $125 million in public and private funding, Governor Mikie Sherrill announced on October 20, revealing major contributions from NVIDIA co-founder Chris Malachowsky, technology company SHI International, and the state government.
The announcement provides new details about the initiative, including its funding, operating arrangements, university partnerships, and research priorities.
NVIDIA Co-Founder Donates $75 Million
Chris Malachowsky, a Monmouth County native and co-founder of NVIDIA, and his wife Melody are personally contributing $75 million to support the project.
Somerset County-based SHI International is investing another $25 million, while the New Jersey Economic Development Authority is providing $25 million in state funding.
The initiative will create a shared supercomputing resource for universities, researchers, students, and businesses across New Jersey.
Supercomputer to Be Hosted in New Jersey
SHI International will design, integrate, host, and operate the computing infrastructure at its existing facilities in New Jersey.
Beginning in 2027, the initiative is scheduled to be administered by an independent nonprofit organization.
The project aims to double the combined supercomputing capacity currently available at New Jersey’s research universities and increase access to the most advanced computing technology tenfold.
Research Could Target Cancer and Flooding
State officials say dozens of potential projects are already under review for 2027.
Researchers could use the new computing capabilities to detect and treat cancer, accelerate drug development, predict flooding, protect coastal communities, and improve the safety of artificial intelligence systems.
Eight New Jersey research universities are participating, alongside the New Jersey Council of County Colleges.
The initiative will also support workforce training, apprenticeships, and educational programs in AI, data science, and advanced computing.
The announcement marks a significant step from the project’s original planning phase toward the development of shared scientific infrastructure for New Jersey.
