New Jersey Governor Mikie Sherrill has delivered a strong message to major technology companies, emphasizing that protecting children from harmful social media practices remains a priority for her administration.
In a new social media statement, Sherrill highlighted the recently announced Social Media Research Center at Rutgers University, saying New Jersey intends to lead efforts to protect young people online.
“With our new Social Media Research Center at Rutgers University, New Jersey is going to lead the way in protecting our kids online,” Sherrill wrote.
She followed with an even stronger warning:
“Because Big Tech shouldn’t get to prey on our kids’ insecurities or hijack their childhoods. Not here. Not ever.”
A Stronger Focus on Children’s Online Safety
The governor’s comments follow the October 19 announcement that Rutgers University will host New Jersey’s new Social Media Research Center, supported by $500,000 in state funding.
The center will examine how social media affects children’s mental health, including anxiety, depression, sleep problems, and potentially addictive online behavior.
Researchers will also explore ways to reduce harmful social media use and provide practical recommendations for parents, educators, and policymakers.
Holding Technology Companies Accountable
Sherrill’s latest statement reinforces her administration’s broader effort to hold major technology companies accountable for how their platforms affect young users.
Earlier this year, New Jersey adopted legislation strengthening online privacy protections for minors and addressing social media features designed to encourage prolonged engagement.
The governor’s latest remarks do not announce additional legislation or a new policy. Instead, they underline her position that protecting children online should take priority over business practices that may exploit their vulnerabilities.
