New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani says an ICE agent shot a New Yorker in Marble Hill on Thursday afternoon while a 5-year-old child was inside the man’s vehicle.

In a statement posted on X, Mamdani said early reports indicated that federal agents surrounded the man and the child in a car before multiple shots were fired.

“We believe the child was physically unharmed,” Mamdani said.

The shooting occurred around 4 p.m. in Marble Hill, a Manhattan neighborhood bordering the Bronx. The New York Police Department confirmed that one person was shot during an encounter involving federal law enforcement agents and was taken to a hospital conscious and receiving treatment. NYPD officers were not involved in the shooting.

The FBI also confirmed that an evidence response team was assisting the Department of Homeland Security at the scene. Federal authorities have not yet released a full account of what led to the shooting.

Mamdani Calls Incident “Unconscionable”

Mamdani described the incident as “an unconscionable and incredibly serious situation.”

He said he had called President Donald Trump and planned to demand an end to ICE enforcement actions in New York City.

The mayor ended his statement with a series of calls to remove ICE from neighborhoods, hospitals and city streets, concluding with: “Abolish ICE.”

The mayor’s account that a 5-year-old child was inside the vehicle and that agents surrounded the car before firing has not yet been independently confirmed in the detailed public statements from federal authorities.

New York Gov. Kathy Hochul has also called for transparency and a full explanation of what happened.

The shooting remains under investigation.
