A large fire sent thick smoke over Jersey City on Tuesday afternoon as firefighters battled flames at a multi-family home in the Heights.

The Jersey City Fire Department responded to 121 Franklin Street, near Hancock Avenue, where crews found fire burning in both third-floor apartments of the three-story attached home. Flames had also spread through the roof by the time firefighters arrived.

Images and videos shared from across Jersey City and even from Manhattan showed a large column of dark smoke rising above the neighborhood. Citizen reported that firefighters were working from the roof as smoke drifted across the area.

Fire Spread to Neighboring Building

According to officials cited by ABC7, firefighters were able to bring the blaze under control and limit the spread to one neighboring attached home, 119 Franklin Street.

The response drew a heavy emergency presence to the neighborhood, and residents reported road closures and fire crews arriving from other parts of the city as the incident escalated.

Local witnesses posting from the Heights described the fire as intense and said the smoke could be seen from several miles away. Some residents reported that the smoke later changed from dark black to lighter gray and white as firefighters gained control of the blaze. Those eyewitness reports should be treated as preliminary rather than official confirmation.

Three People Injured

One woman was treated at the scene for smoke inhalation, according to officials.

Two firefighters were also taken to a local hospital for evaluation. One suffered an injury involving debris near the eyes, while another sustained burns to the back of the neck.

Three residents were displaced by the fire, and Jersey City officials and the American Red Cross are assisting them.

The cause of the fire has not yet been determined.

The incident remains under investigation.
