New Jersey Rep. LaMonica McIver announced Thursday that she gave birth to a healthy baby girl, making her the first member of Congress from New Jersey to give birth while serving in office.

McIver, who represents New Jersey’s 10th Congressional District, shared the news on October 1, saying both she and the baby were doing well. The birth marks a rare milestone in congressional history, with only a small number of women having given birth while serving in the U.S. House or Senate.

A Historic First for New Jersey

McIver’s office confirmed that the baby was born Thursday morning.

According to reporting cited by New Jersey media, McIver is believed to be only the 15th member of Congress in U.S. history to give birth while holding federal office.

Her announcement adds a personal milestone to a political career that has quickly placed her among New Jersey’s most visible members of Congress.

Time With Family Before Returning to Washington

McIver said she plans to spend October recovering and with her family before returning to Washington in November.

Her office is expected to continue operating during that period, while congressional votes and legislative responsibilities resume after her return.

The moment is also significant as more women serve in elected office while raising young families, reflecting broader changes in who serves in Congress and how public office intersects with family life.

For New Jersey, McIver’s announcement represents a first in the state’s congressional history.
