Every day, the equivalent of 1 billion meals is wasted around the world, according to the United Nations Environment Programme.
At the same time, millions of people continue to face hunger and food insecurity.
On the International Day of Awareness of Food Loss and Waste, UNEP is calling for stronger action to reduce food loss and waste at every stage of the food system.
The message is simple: preventing food waste is not only an environmental issue. It is also about fairness, food security and responsibility.
Reducing waste means planning meals more carefully, using leftovers, donating surplus food when possible and improving the way food is stored, transported and distributed.
UNEP says tackling food loss and waste is essential to building a more sustainable food system and reducing unnecessary pressure on land, water and other natural resources.
The issue also has a direct social dimension. While enormous quantities of food are discarded each day, many families around the world still struggle to access enough nutritious food.
For communities, households, schools, restaurants and places of worship, small changes in everyday habits can make a meaningful difference.
