UN Chief Calls for Societies Free of Racism and Discrimination
United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres used a simple but powerful message Sunday to call for greater action against racism, discrimination and injustice.
“Together, let’s fight for the dignity, rights and belonging of all people,” Guterres said, urging people around the world to reject divisions based on race, identity or background.
In a message shared by the United Nations, he added:
“Let’s build societies where racism and discrimination have no place.”
The statement comes at a time when the United Nations continues to emphasize equality, human dignity and protection from discrimination as fundamental human rights.
Guterres has repeatedly argued that racism and discrimination are not only individual acts of prejudice, but broader social problems that can weaken communities, deepen inequality and create exclusion.
His latest message focuses on the idea of belonging — that people should not only be protected from discrimination, but also feel that they are fully included in the societies in which they live.
The UN Secretary-General called on governments, institutions and individuals to help build communities where dignity and equal rights are respected in everyday life.
The message, shared on September 28, is brief, but its meaning is clear: societies are stronger when racism and discrimination are rejected, and when every person is treated with dignity and respect.
