New Jersey unexpectedly found itself at the center of an international political joke this week after Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa said he had suggested that President Donald Trump give New Jersey to Israel instead of recognizing Israeli sovereignty over the Golan Heights.

Al-Sharaa made the remark during an Atlantic Council event in New York on Tuesday, where he discussed Syria’s relations with Israel and recounted a previous conversation with Trump about the Golan Heights.

“Why Don’t You Give New Jersey to the Israelis?”

According to al-Sharaa, he told Trump that the United States had no right to give away territory that it does not own.

He then joked:

“Why don’t you give New Jersey to the Israelis?”

Al-Sharaa continued by saying that Trump did not own the Golan Heights, while joking that New Jersey was something he could give away instead. He also referred to New Jersey’s Democratic-leaning electorate as part of the joke.

The remark was clearly presented as satire rather than an actual diplomatic proposal.

The Serious Point Behind the Joke

Behind the humor was a serious dispute over the Golan Heights.

Israel captured most of the Golan Heights from Syria during the 1967 Six-Day War and later extended Israeli law and administration to the territory. The United States under Trump recognized Israeli sovereignty over the Golan Heights in 2019, a position rejected by Syria and not recognized by most of the international community.

Al-Sharaa argued that neither an American president nor a Syrian president has the right to simply transfer the territory to another country because, as he put it, the Golan belongs to its people.

New Jersey Enters Middle East Diplomacy

The unusual New Jersey reference quickly attracted attention because it transformed a complex territorial dispute into a deliberately simple comparison.

Al-Sharaa’s point was essentially that recognizing another country’s sovereignty over disputed foreign territory would be comparable, in his view, to giving away part of the United States.

New Jersey happened to become his example.

The comment was also political humor directed specifically at Trump, because al-Sharaa added that New Jersey has many Democratic voters who do not support him.

Al-Sharaa Repeats Syria’s Position at the UN

A day later, al-Sharaa addressed the United Nations General Assembly and repeated Syria’s position that the Golan Heights will remain Syrian territory.

He said attempts to violate Syrian sovereignty and international law would be opposed, while also leaving open the possibility of future peace and security arrangements with neighboring countries.

So, no — New Jersey is not actually being offered to anyone.

But for a few moments this week, the Garden State became part of one of the more unusual diplomatic exchanges surrounding the United Nations General Assembly.
