A U.S. representative walked out of the United Nations General Assembly hall on Wednesday as Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian delivered his address to world leaders in New York.
The departure came as Pezeshkian accused the United States and Israel of responsibility for civilian deaths during strikes on Iran and displayed images that he said showed children killed in attacks on a school in Minab and a sports facility in Lamerd.
During the speech, Pezeshkian said Iran would not surrender in its conflict with the United States, while also maintaining that diplomacy remained a possible path toward ending the confrontation. Reuters reported that he used the UN appearance to defend Iran’s position and reject accusations that Tehran was responsible for terrorism.
The U.S. representative left the hall as Pezeshkian continued criticizing Washington’s military actions and describing Iran as acting in self-defense. Video of the moment circulated widely on social media shortly after the speech.
The walkout came one day after members of the Iranian delegation left the General Assembly hall during President Donald Trump’s address, when Trump discussed Iran and warned of further U.S. action if no agreement is reached.
The reciprocal walkouts underscored the tensions surrounding this year’s UN General Assembly, even as U.S. and Iranian officials continue diplomatic contacts in New York.
