Today, September 21, the world marks the International Day of Peace, a United Nations observance dedicated to strengthening the ideals of peace within and among nations and communities.
This year’s theme is “Invest in Peace: For Everyone, Everywhere, Every Day.” The message reflects a simple idea: peace is not only the absence of war. It also means living with dignity, safety, opportunity, justice and cooperation in everyday life.
The United Nations is using this year’s observance to recognize what it calls the “everyday architects of peace” — volunteers, advocates, community leaders, peacekeepers and ordinary people who work to bridge divisions and strengthen their communities from the ground up.
UN Secretary-General António Guterres said that peace is not passive or automatic, but something that requires deliberate action. In his message for the day, he called for greater investment in diplomacy, dialogue, sustainable development, human rights, education, health and social protection.
The observance comes at a time when conflicts around the world are becoming more complex and destructive, while political divisions and distrust continue to challenge international cooperation. The UN says that building peace requires more than agreements between governments — it also depends on what happens in schools, neighborhoods, workplaces and communities.
The International Day of Peace was established by the United Nations General Assembly in 1981. In 2001, the General Assembly designated September 21 as a day devoted to non-violence and ceasefire.
This year’s message is therefore not only directed at governments.
It is directed at everyone.
Peace can be strengthened through small actions: helping another person, speaking against hatred, creating dialogue where there is division, supporting communities, and protecting the dignity of others.
As the United Nations puts it, peace is built “for everyone, everywhere, every day.”
