New York is once again becoming the center of global diplomacy as world leaders arrive for the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly and its annual High-Level Week. World Leaders Gather in New York for UN General Assembly High-Level Week
The main General Debate begins September 22 and runs through September 26, returning again on September 28, when heads of state, heads of government and other senior representatives take the podium at UN Headquarters to present their countries’ priorities and positions on major global issues. Nearly 130 heads of state and government are expected to attend in person.
This year’s theme is “Restoring trust, managing transformation: A United Nations that delivers for all.” The 81st session is being presided over by Khalilur Rahman of Bangladesh.
The week will go far beyond the traditional speeches in the General Assembly Hall. The UN has scheduled a series of major high-level meetings focused on some of the most urgent global challenges.
On September 23, leaders will gather for a high-level event on climate action and the just transition, as well as a meeting marking the 40th anniversary of the Declaration on the Right to Development.
On September 24, attention will turn to the growing threat of sea-level rise, with leaders and experts expected to discuss the risks facing low-lying coastal regions and small island states.
On September 25, the General Assembly will hold a major meeting on pandemic prevention, preparedness and response, aimed at strengthening international cooperation ahead of future public-health emergencies.
The high-level program continues on September 28 with a meeting marking the 25th anniversary of the Durban Declaration and Programme of Action, focused on racism, racial discrimination, xenophobia and related intolerance. A day later, on September 29, the UN will hold a high-level plenary meeting tied to the International Day for the Total Elimination of Nuclear Weapons.
The week also includes the SDG Media Zone, running from September 21 through 25, with interviews and discussions focused on progress toward the Sustainable Development Goals. Other events will address peace and security, health, climate, development and emerging global challenges.
The United Nations summed up the week in a simple message:
“One week. One stage. Many voices.”
To make the proceedings accessible to a wider global audience, the UN is encouraging people to follow coverage in multiple languages, including Arabic, French, Hindi, Kiswahili, Portuguese, Russian and Spanish. Events from the High-Level Week are also being streamed live through UN Web TV.
For New York, the gathering means more than diplomacy inside the UN building. The annual General Assembly brings heavy security, street closures, motorcades and traffic disruptions across Midtown Manhattan as delegations move between the United Nations, hotels, consulates and bilateral meetings.
But at its core, the week remains one of the few moments each year when leaders from nearly every part of the world gather in one city and, one after another, speak from the same stage.
