Cape May County Warns About Methamphetamine That Resembles Candy

Authorities in Cape May County are warning parents and residents after police in Wildwood seized unusually shaped and brightly colored methamphetamine that could easily be mistaken for candy or vitamins.

Wildwood police made the discovery on September 17 after responding to the 200 block of East Spencer Avenue following a report of a person with a handgun. Officers located a 36-year-old Vineland man and later searched his vehicle.

Police said they recovered a handgun along with substances molded into colorful shapes resembling popular candy or multivitamins.

Testing by the Cape May County Forensic Laboratory confirmed the substances were methamphetamine.

The Cape May County Prosecutor’s Office issued a public warning because the appearance of the drugs could be especially dangerous around children, who might not recognize them as an illegal substance. Officials urged parents and caregivers to remain vigilant.

The suspect faces weapons, controlled dangerous substance and other related charges. The charges are allegations, and the defendant is presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court.

The case also highlights a broader safety issue: illegal drugs do not always look the way people expect. Colorful shapes, tablets or substances packaged to resemble familiar products should never be assumed to be harmless simply because of their appearance.

Parents should remind children never to eat an unknown candy, pill or vitamin they find outside its original packaging and to immediately show it to a trusted adult.
