World leaders are gathering in New York this week for the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly, one of the largest annual diplomatic meetings in the world.

The General Debate begins on September 22, bringing presidents, prime ministers and senior representatives from the UN’s 193 member states to the General Assembly Hall. This year’s theme is “Restoring trust, managing transformation: A United Nations that delivers for all.”

The agenda comes at a time of multiple global crises. Leaders are expected to discuss international conflicts and security, climate change, artificial intelligence, sustainable development, pandemic preparedness and rising sea levels.

Several major high-level meetings are also scheduled during the week, including a climate event on September 23, a meeting on the existential threat posed by sea-level rise on September 24, and a meeting on pandemic prevention and preparedness on September 25.

For several days, New York will once again become the center of global diplomacy as countries present their priorities, disagreements and proposals for addressing some of the world’s most difficult challenges.
