Heavy rain caused flooding in parts of Paterson, New Jersey, on Sunday morning, leaving sections of 11th Avenue underwater as a storm moved across the region.

Video shared by ABC7 Eyewitness News showed significant standing water on the roadway, highlighting the continuing vulnerability of some Paterson neighborhoods during periods of intense rainfall.

Mayor Andre Sayegh said infrastructure improvements are underway in the city but acknowledged that additional work is still needed to protect areas that repeatedly experience flooding. Sayegh was reelected to a third term as Paterson mayor earlier this year.

The National Weather Service had placed northeastern New Jersey, including Passaic County, under a Flood Watch through midday Sunday. Forecasters warned that heavy downpours could produce rainfall totals of 1.5 to 3 inches, with significantly higher localized amounts possible.

Gov. Mikie Sherrill also urged motorists to avoid flooded roads and never attempt to drive through standing or moving floodwater.

The National Weather Service warns that even relatively shallow floodwater can make roads dangerous and advises drivers to turn around rather than attempt to cross flooded areas.
