NJ Transit is expanding free Wi-Fi across its bus fleet, with 1,500 buses already offering the service and plans for 83% of all buses to be connected by the end of 2026.

The agency says Wi-Fi-equipped buses are being fitted with two modems to help maintain a more reliable connection while vehicles are moving.

The upgrade is part of a broader technology push at NJ Transit. New digital bus stop signs are also being introduced to give riders real-time arrival information, while the agency says its updated mobile app has improved bus arrival accuracy to about 86%.

NJ Transit President and CEO Kris Kolluri said the agency’s real-time bus arrival accuracy had been around 74% before June, indicating a significant improvement in recent months.

The free Wi-Fi expansion is being funded with $21 million in federal grant money.

For commuters, the change means more opportunities to work, check messages or stay connected during bus trips without relying entirely on their own cellular data.
