Two House Democrats are asking the Government Accountability Office to investigate how personal information collected through Freedom 250 events, ticket registrations and merchandise purchases has been handled ahead of the midterm elections.
Reps. Jared Huffman of California and Joseph Morelle of New York said people who registered for Freedom 250 events provided information including names, email addresses, phone numbers and ZIP codes through Campaign Nucleus, a platform owned by Brad Parscale, President Donald Trump’s former campaign manager.
The lawmakers also pointed to other vendors connected to Freedom 250 that collect billing, mailing and contact information through merchandise sales and email or text communications. They are asking the GAO to determine whether any of that data has been shared with or made available to political committees or organizations tied to Trump and Republican campaigns.
Their request also asks the watchdog to examine how much federal funding may have supported data-collection activities and whether existing safeguards prevent information gathered through Freedom 250 from being used for political purposes.
The request follows an earlier House Democratic report examining Freedom 250’s operations and its role in events marking America’s 250th anniversary.
