Bayonne’s historic run at the Little League World Series came to an end Tuesday night after the Fighting Bees fell 5–2 to Hamilton, Ohio, in an elimination game in Williamsport, Pennsylvania.
The loss ended a remarkable summer for Bayonne, which was making its first appearance in the Little League World Series. The team entered Tuesday’s game needing a victory to stay alive after suffering its first tournament loss, 6–0, to Davenport, Iowa, over the weekend.
Bayonne had opened the World Series with two victories, including a dramatic 2–1 win over Massachusetts and a 3–1 victory over West Chester, Pennsylvania. The team’s run followed an undefeated stretch that included Bayonne Little League’s first state championship and first Metro Region championship.
Tuesday’s 5–2 loss to Ohio officially ended the Fighting Bees’ World Series journey.
New Jersey Gov. Mikie Sherrill congratulated the players after the game, praising the way they represented their hometown and the state.
“What a run by the Fighting Bees. You played hard until the very end and represented Bayonne and New Jersey well. Congratulations on an incredible season,” Sherrill wrote.
The Fighting Bees’ appearance in Williamsport capped a season that had already made history for Bayonne and turned the team into one of New Jersey’s biggest sports stories of the summer.
