WASHINGTON, DC — President Donald Trump returned to the White House Correspondents’ Dinner, three months after the original April event was interrupted by a security incident at the Washington Hilton, where the ceremony was scheduled to take place.

Trump’s Message to the Media
During his speech, President Donald Trump suggested that many media organizations benefit from his political presence and public attention.
“When I’m gone, you’ll all go bankrupt. Your business model will be finished,” Trump told reporters, adding that he briefly wore a “Trump 2028” hat during the event.
Trump also joked about his relationship with journalists, saying there were “many people he likes, some he does not like at all, but most he respects.”
He added that he had removed some of the harsher jokes from the speech he originally prepared for the April event.
“I wanted to really go after them, but I had to cancel that,” Trump said jokingly.

Response From Journalists
Weijia Jiang, president of the White House Correspondents’ Association and senior White House correspondent for CBS News, said there is a difference between criticism of the media and attempts to weaken journalism.
“One is healthy and makes us better, and the other is exactly what the founders wanted to prevent,” Jiang said.
Her comments reflected ongoing concerns among journalists about the relationship between political leaders and the press.
Security Concerns After April Incident
This year’s dinner was held at the Waldorf Astoria Washington DC after the April event at the Washington Hilton was stopped when an armed man attempted to pass through a security checkpoint. Secret Service officers intervened and stopped the individual.
Because of the earlier incident, organizers introduced additional security measures. Guests were required to go through multiple security screenings, present a unique QR code, and show valid identification before entering the event.
Secret Service Director Sean Curran said every location involving the president undergoes a detailed security assessment, while officials warned that the number of threats requiring protection has increased compared with previous years.
During the ceremony, the White House Correspondents’ Association recognized a Secret Service officer who was struck in his protective vest during the April incident, as well as hotel employees who helped respond during the emergency.
A Different Relationship With the Dinner
Although it is traditional for U.S. presidents to attend the White House Correspondents’ Dinner, this marked the first time Trump addressed the event during one of his two presidencies.
During his first term, Trump skipped the dinner and frequently criticized journalists, including many members of the media who attended this year’s gathering.
The event once again highlighted the complicated relationship between the White House and the press — a relationship that has remained one of the most debated issues in American politics.
