A pilot was killed and two Pennsylvania State Police troopers were injured Wednesday evening after a small airplane collided with a police helicopter near a runway at Carlisle Regional Airport.
The crash involved a Cessna 150 and a Pennsylvania State Police Bell 407 helicopter near the airport in Carlisle, Pennsylvania.
According to authorities, the airplane collided with the helicopter during a training operation near the runway. The pilot of the Cessna died in the crash.
Both Pennsylvania State Police troopers aboard the helicopter survived and were taken for medical treatment. Authorities said they were in stable condition.
Officials described the collision as violent. The helicopter lost its rotor blades and tail boom and came to rest on its side following the impact.
Authorities have not yet established exactly how the collision occurred or confirmed whether the Cessna was still airborne at the moment of impact.
The identity of the pilot had not initially been released pending notification of family members.
The Federal Aviation Administration and National Transportation Safety Board are investigating the crash and will work to determine what led to the collision.
Pennsylvania officials expressed condolences to the pilot’s family while noting that the incident could have resulted in even more casualties.
The investigation remains ongoing.
