President Donald Trump called an ABC News reporter “a stupid person” after she questioned whether delaying sanctions against Russia amounted to a concession in negotiations for the release of an American prisoner.

President Donald Trump clashed with reporters on Wednesday after being questioned about the relationship between U.S. sanctions on Russia and the release of American citizen Stephen Hubbard, who had spent more than four years in Russian detention.

During the exchange, ABC News correspondent Karen Travers asked whether the administration had effectively offered Moscow something in return by holding back sanctions.

Trump responded sharply:

“You’re a stupid person. And by the way, your network is the worst of all.”

The confrontation was captured on video and shared by Fox News.

American Teacher Released After Four Years

Stephen Hubbard, a 74-year-old retired teacher from Michigan, was released by Russia on Wednesday following diplomatic discussions involving Russian President Vladimir Putin and U.S. special envoy Steve Witkoff.

Hubbard had been detained since April 2022, shortly after Russia invaded Ukraine. Russian authorities accused him of fighting as a mercenary for Ukrainian forces, allegations denied by his family and legal representatives.

Trump said he had personally requested Hubbard’s release from Putin and insisted that the United States had given nothing in exchange.

Questions Over Sanctions

The confrontation with reporters centered on the administration’s decision to delay certain sanctions against Russia while negotiations for Hubbard’s release were underway.

Trump acknowledged that imposing sanctions could have jeopardized the negotiations but rejected suggestions that their postponement constituted a concession to Moscow.

CNN correspondent Kaitlan Collins also pressed Trump on the issue. He responded by calling her a “dummy” and a “low-IQ person.”

The exchanges drew attention to both the administration’s diplomatic approach toward Russia and the president’s treatment of journalists asking questions about foreign policy decisions.

A Diplomatic Success and an Unanswered Question

Hubbard’s release represents a significant development for an American citizen who had spent years in Russian custody.

However, the timing of the sanctions decision has raised questions about whether Washington’s decision to hold back economic pressure on Moscow played a role in securing his freedom.

Trump maintains that no exchange or concession was made.
